In Esquipulas, Guatemala

Well, I made it to Esquipulas, Guatemala, and am staying at the Benedictine monastery connected to the famous Basilica of Esquipulas. Being here during the beginning of Semana Santa is also an added plus. Pictures of my trip will follow upon my return.

I have to say that Esquipulas is a lovely city. It's not too big, such that it has a very neighborly feel and one can basically traverse the expanse of the city proper on foot. It's not too small and so it doesn't feel like a rural village. In terms of city size and sense of community, it reminds me a lot of Queretaro, Mexico.

Everyone here is just as friendly as can be. Can't wait to see how the rest of my short trip turns out.

Wife and I just visited the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe this afternoon. I'll give it up to you Catholics (exodus, or otherwise), you sure know how to employ architecture to make a grand statement about God. Incredible stuff. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks, Eric.

Vern - I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't judge my Catholic faith when you know absolutely nothing about me. Last I checked, there was no Papal prohibition on supporting Obama. In fact, I know many good Catholic priests and nuns, and I'd imagine even a couple of bishops across the globe, who support Obama. So I think even the Pope wouldn't judge me or question my faith the way you just have. Catholics have differing opinions on a lot of things, and just because you and I have differing opinions about Obama, that doesn't mean that either you or I are necessarily good or bad Catholics. By the way, Matt Rousso and I are going to visit the folks at Ciudad de Felicidad tomorrow.
